EXPLORING CREATIVITY

About John Richter

ARTISTIC VISION

INSPIRATION

My sculptural work explores the raw beauty and complexity of the world through abstract forms, but its roots lie in the joys and challenges of growing up. The shift from childhood into adulthood — shaped by the eras, cultures, and places I moved through — has left a lasting mark on how I see and shape the world.

Travel through weathered coastlines, ancient villages, and shifting landscapes added further layers to that perspective.

These experiences surface in my work as layered textures and varied forms — not recreating exactly, but capturing the feelings: the awe, curiosity, and naïve joy of encountering the world while being shaped by it.

Using a blend of materials and tactile surfaces, I aim to evoke a sense of connection to the elemental forces that shape both our world and ourselves.

Each work becomes a gesture of observation, memory, and transformation — holding together the tension between permanence and decay, stillness and motion, while celebrating the playful resilience of life itself.

CREATIVE JOURNEY

Formerly a passionfruit farmer, my artistic journey was long nourished in the margins of a busy horticultural life. Though creativity was always present, it found expression in the design and build of necessary agricultural equipment or the formation of a new paddock.

It wasn’t until we sold the farm that I could free my soul from its daily grind and fully explore my sensorial calling. I began with realism in painting, being drawn to detail and precision, but soon discovered that tactile, physical forms offered me a deeper, more instinctive mode of expression.

In recent years, I have travelled throughout Australia and to France, gathering corporeal inspiration from the raw textures of the lands around me. From the sculpted rock shelves exposed by receding tides along the remote coastlines of WA, to the weathered limestone cliffs of the ancient Lot valley in southwest France, these landscapes became my silent mentors.

Overlay these experiences with vignettes of remembered joys from the decades of my life, and the resulting collection is my reflection of those forms: organic, layered, and grounded in life's chaotic and splendid complexity.
